Game day is all about the snacks in front of the television. However, most of time these snacks consist of fried ingredients or salty chips. This can become bad quickly. What if you could make some healthier snacks that will please everyone coming over? Keep reading for 4 healthy game day recipes ideal for the big game.
Jalapeño Popper Dip
The recipe is keto and dairy-free, but can be made an alternative way to include the dairy aspect. It has everything included in an ordinary popper without being fried. You can also make the dip ahead of time and heat it up when you are ready to serve. If you want to make it vegan or vegetarian, use cashew cream and leave out the bacon.
- First preheat your oven to 400 degrees F and grease an oven-safe baking dish. Be sure to coat the pan well or else you will have a hard time getting the dip out.
- In a bowl, whisk together cashew cream, mayo, natural yeast, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Next, add kale, jalapeños, bacon (if desired), and green onion to the cashew mixture. Mix until it is combined well.
- Scoop the dip out of bowl and place into the baking dish. Smooth the top and add leftover bacon and jalapeños.
- Cook for about 18 minutes or until hot and melted.
- Serve with tortilla chips, celery, carrots, or crackers.
Paleo Chicken Wings
Chicken wings are a must-have for game day. This recipe is baked instead of fried and has a homemade sauce that approves this healthy snack. These are a perfect thing to have as an appetizer or main course during the game.
- Start by preheating the oven to 425 degrees F. You should also line a baking sheet with foil for easy clean-up later.
- In a resealable plastic bag, toss wings in arrowroot, salt, pepper, onion, and garlic powder. Make sure you coat them well and put extra if needed.
- Let the wings marinate for a few minutes and then lay them on the baking sheet in a single layer and bake for about 35 minutes. Wings should be a little crispy when you take them out.
- While the wings are cooking, you can start on the sauce. In a sauce pan, combine tomato sauce, tomato paste, date paste, apple cider vinegar, spicy brown mustard, lime juice, chili, onion, garlic powder, and lastly paprika. Let these ingredients simmer on low for about 15-20 minutes.
- Once this is complete, whisk in ghee. Ghee is a form of middle eastern butter. Heat for a few more minutes.
- Once the wings come out of the oven, use tongs and dip each wing into the sauce. Then bake for an addition couple of minutes. Apply more sauce after completion.
- Serve and enjoy!
Broccoli Vegan Pizza
The first thing that comes to mind when you think of game day is pizza. That's why you can't love game day without it. However, this pizza changes the game. Everyone will enjoy this treat and won't be feeling bad after!
- Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F.
- In a medium bowl, combine cherry tomatoes, broccoli, corn, onion, jalapeños, and sun dried tomatoes. Drizzle the mixture with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper. They should be very well-coated to add flavor to the pizza.
- To make the cashew cream, add cashew, olive oil, water, lemon juice, and garlic to a blender. Blend until creamy. You may need to add additional water.
- You can use store-bought pizza dough for this recipe. Stretch the dough to about 14 inches in diameter. Then brush the outer edges with olive oil.
- Spoon a few scoops of the cashew cream onto the dough. You should only use enough to spread thin layer across the top.
- Now you can distribute the vegetables across the pizza and bake for 15 minutes. The crust should be golden brown and broccoli should be tender and roasted.
- Once you remove the pizza from the oven, apply the rest of the cashew cream and drizzle with more olive oil.
- Garnish with pepper flakes and fresh basil.
Greek Turkey Burgers
Game day is all about finger food. What is better finger food than a burger? Turkey is a lighter and healthier alternative to beef. These burgers will not leave you longing for beef anymore!
- Start with a large bowl. Add ground turkey, spinach, sun dried tomatoes, red onion, and feta cheese.
- In a small bowl whisk together garlic, egg, olive oil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Combine the 2 mixes together and use your hands to mix together. Then divide the meat into 4 portions and mold into patties.
- Wrap each with parchment paper and place in fridge for up to 1 hour. This allows the burgers time to firm up. These burgers can be frozen for up to 3 months as well
- Next, make the tzatziki sauce. Start with grating a cucumber in a bowl. Then add yogurt, garlic, red wine vinegar, fresh dill, salt, and ground pepper. This should be refrigerated for 30 minutes but can stay as long as 3 days.
- Heat a nonstick pan over a medium flame. Unwrap the burgers and cover them inside the pan. Each side should cook for about 5 mins.
- Once finished, apply the tzatziki to the buns and burger. If desired, add lettuce, tomato, and onion.
